At Plebian Pools, we know there’s nothing better than cooling off in your own backyard pool. But if you glance down one day and notice sand at the bottom of your pool, don’t panic. We’re here to help you figure out what’s going on, how to fix it, and how to prevent it from happening again.

Why Is There Sand in My Pool?

Sand in your pool is typically a sign that something inside your filter has cracked or broken. The most common culprits are the standpipe and the laterals.

  • The standpipe is a plastic pipe that runs through the center of your filter. If it cracks, sand can escape and return to your pool.

  • The laterals are small arms at the bottom of the filter. They keep sand in place while allowing clean water to flow back into your pool. If one breaks, sand can leak out with the water.

These are issues resulting from normal wear and tear. They are especially common in older filters or if the filter was moved or bumped while full of heavy sand.

How to Fix Sand Issues in Your Pool

The only long-term solution is to open up your filter and replace the broken part(s). This process is like changing out your filter sand. It’s a perfect time to do both tasks!

Pro Tip: If you’re handy, you can order replacement laterals or standpipes online. But if you’d prefer to leave it to the pros, give us a call—we’re happy to help.

Cleaning Sand Out of Your Pool

After fixing your filter, it’s essential to clean the sand already in your pool. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Use a pool brush to gather the sand into one area.

  2. Set your filter valve to “Filter.”

  3. Vacuum manually. Avoid using an automatic cleaner, as it may stir the sand instead of cleaning it.

  4. Test and balance your water once you're finished vacuuming.

What If I Don’t Have a Sand Filter?

If the substance in your pool looks like sand, but you don’t have a sand filter, it may be mustard algae. A simple test is to brush it. If it clouds up, it’s algae, not sand. In that case, treat your pool with a shock treatment and follow the mustard algae removal steps.

Ongoing Maintenance for a Clear Pool

Keeping your water clear and sand-free is essential. If you have a sand filter, remember—they’re reliable, but like any piece of equipment, they’ll need maintenance over time.

Here are some tips for regular pool maintenance to avoid sand problems:

  • Inspect your filter regularly. Check for cracks or breaks in the standpipe and laterals.

  • Replace sand every few years. This helps maintain filter efficiency.

  • Monitor your water chemistry. Keeping water balanced prevents problems that might lead to filter issues.

If you notice sand in your pool, don’t wait. Fix it early to avoid more extensive cleanup. This proactive approach keeps your pool safe and sparkling all summer long.
